The Human Library

The Human Library invites participants to "borrow" a person as a living book, listening to their life story with openness and curiosity.

The method is especially valuable in contexts of migration and diversity, where prejudices are common and understanding is essential.

The Human Library offers vulnerable people the chance to share their biographies in a safe space, while listeners are encouraged to reflect and question their assumptions. Strict rules maintain respect and protection: respect the book, don’t judge by appearances, and return the book safely. Both the book and the reader may end the conversation at any time.

The role of librarians is to support the process and ensure safety. After listening, participants are invited to engage in open discussions, reflecting on what they heard. Each story becomes a source of empathy, understanding, and conflict prevention. In this way, the Human Library transforms individual experiences into powerful educational encounters.
